SCIROCCO, the largest plasma wind tunnel facility of the world, was used to test the full-scale geometrical model of the HYFLEX nose cap constructed of ceramic materials in order to evaluate the reentry heating simulation method on large structural elements. The temperature and pressure responses of the model surface were successfully measured and compared with the flight data and analytical calculations. Surface pressure responses were mostly as expected. Some interesting responses related to temperatures and heating rates were detected and are discussed in terms of catalytic recombination effects.
