In this paper, a method for detecting breakage of multi-edge tools is studied by means of the fluctuation of the spindle rotational speed. The fluctuation of the spindle speed can be easily obtained via a tachometer generator or a pulse generator without any additional measurement equipment. It corresponds to the cutting torque fluctuation during intermittent cutting operations, and reflects the effect of tool breakage, which induces a change in the pattern of the cutting torque fluctuation. Three monitoring parameters are derived from the spindle speed measurement. These parameters indicate changes in the pattern of the fluctuation with a broken tool. In monitoring experiments, these parameters showed clear changes upon tool breakage, and were proven to be an effective means for monitoring tool breakage.
