Traction properties of blended oils

    A study on the additivity of the traction coefficient of blended oils allowed determining the effect of the intensity of interactions between oil molecules on the additivity. In the case of synthetic naphthene oil/naphthene type mineral oil with wear interactions between molecules, the additivity was established between the ratio of blending and the atmospheric viscosity, and between the value α and the maximal traction coefficient. In systems with weak interactions between molecules, the sectional flow of components showed the individual behavior in blended oils and the additivity was established in terms of the activated volume (ΔV). In the case of cyclohexanone/cyclohexylamine system (blended oil B) forming two- or three-molecule associates by forming hydrogen bonds between molecules and cyclohexanone/1,2-diaminocyclohexane system (blended oil C), the additivity between the ratio of blending and the atmospheric viscosity and between the value α and the maximal traction coefficient was not established. In the case of blended oil B, two-molecule associates and in the case of blended oil C, three-molecule associates were chiefly formed. The correlation between the ratio of blending and the atmospheric viscosity and that between the value α and the maximal traction coefficient exhibited the same tendencies. This was ascribed to the fact that the correlation between the ratio of blending and the value ΔV was reflected in both cases.
