Discusses how traditional types of architecture, as exemplified a volcanic stone house by Niijima Island; a straw roofed house (Yamanashi Prefecture) and a heavy storage house (Kawagoe), exploit characteristics of indigenous building materials and design methods to achieve comfort conditions comparable to modern houses with air conditioning. Presents results of measurements of temperatures, (inside/outside), humidity and air velocity. Describes evaluation of the interior environment using thermal sensation indices, noting that the preferred air movement increases as temperature increases. Discusses the results of applying store to a modern house, the effect of evaporative cooling, and the use of earth sheltering.
