Ferrocene derivative was used for electrochemical disinfection of the marine gram-negative bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus. When cyclic voltammetry was carried out at a scan rate of 20 mV/s at 25°C in seawater (pH 8.0) containing 0.25 mM ferrocene monocarboxylic acid (FCA) and 3.2 × 1011 cells/ml of V. alginolyticus, using basal-plane pyrolytic graphite electrode, an electrocatalytic oxidation wave was observed at 0.3 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Results show that ferrocene derivatives such as FCA can be used for electrochemical prevention of marine biofouling. -from Authors
