In the design of curved bridges, curved girders are commonly approximated by an assemblage of straight beams. However, the validity of the straight beam element approximation has not been satisfactorily verified. The purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of an analysis of a curved beam approximated by an assemblage of straight beams. From the viewpoint of discretization errors, the convergence of solution on the straight beam assemblage to that of the curved beam is investigated, in which a mixed finite element formulation is used. In conclusion, it is proposed that a straight beam element subtending a central angle of less than 10 degree may be suitable for constructing a straight beam assemblage, and that the mixed finite element approach may be useful for the straight beam element approximation.
