Measurement of the condition of burden materials is essential for the stable and efficient operation of the blast furnace. No sensors were formerly available for use in the lower part of the furnace. Nippon Steel has developed an X-band microwave burden sensor that is effective in a high-temperature region above 1,000 degree C. The sensor clearly distinguishes coke layers from ore layers by receiving very weak microwaves propagating through the burden and determines the particle size of the burdern materials from the frequency of change in the intensity of the reflected wave.
